Colleges are charging more because they can get away with it. For example, a degree in engineering can earn you let's say an additional $1,200,000 over a 40-year career. Rents have risen because landlords can get away with it. They will take all the disposable income they can because it works to their advantage if they do, so they do. I've talked before about building excess housing. Then housing would be very cheap, and there are enough resources to make this happen, so why not? The minimum wage came about because kids  were being paid pennies per day for work. The government decided this was unfair for company owners to take advantage of their employees like that.
